New airport opens skies to south west Queensland

Aug 7, 2014

Thought you knew Queensland? Think again!

Australia's newest airport - Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport - is opening the skies to one of Queensland's hidden tourism gems, south west Queensland.

Discover south western Queensland – a myriad of food and wine trails, funky festivals, iconic events like the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, roaring rodeos, natural wonders, artisan delights, luxurious escapes and fun family attractions – all delivered with authentic country hospitality.

Party at the picnic races, meet the wine maker, plunge into fruit picking and grape stomping, reconnect at a family farm stay, wonder at amazing waterfalls or curl up in front of a log fire.

From pasture to plate, the region is a foodies delight as Australia’s second biggest agricultural basin.

It’s also home to the Granite Belt wine country, almost 1000metres above sea level boasting a cool Alpine climate year round – perfect for a delicate verdhello and bold shiraz. Many wines in the region have received rave reviews from critics such as James Halliday.

Ideal for couples, families, wine buffs and gourmet travellers, south western Queensland is authentic, personal, boutique and a little bit country.

Travellers to the region will soon be able to fly direct when Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport (BWWAirport) opens later this year as the first major public airport to service Toowoomba and the surrounding area.

BWWAirport general manager Phil Gregory said airline negotiations were in their final stages with routes expected to include Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Cairns, Mackay, Emerald, Roma and Miles.

“We’re on track to be fully operational by the end of this year. The final layer of asphalt on our 2.87kilometre runway is now complete, the terminal structure is complete and the fit out is underway,” Mr Gregory said.

Other terminal works also include car parking, bus, taxi and hire car areas, ticketing desks, baggage retrieval, departure lounges, cafes, bar and retail areas and office tenancies.

Mr Gregory said BWWAirport also opened up new opportunities for business travellers.

“If you do business west of Brisbane, then Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport is your airport of choice,” Mr Gregory said.

Located 17 kilometres south west of Tooowoomba, BWWAirport will give business travellers direct access to one of Australia’s investment hot spots and the south western Queensland mining hub. It is also the gateway to Australia’s second largest agricultural basin and one of Queensland’s major precincts for health, education and manufacturing.

BWWAirport is being developed by an Australian family-owned company, Wagners - leaders in global construction, logistics and infrastructure projects. The airport is Australia’s first fully privately funded public airport and the first built since Tullamarine opened almost 50 years ago.
