More than 27,300 people flocked to Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport late last year to see 2014 IndyCar champ Will Power race a Cessna Mustang Citation jet down the airport’s newly-completed 2.87 kilometre runway.
The local Toowoomba boy specially flew back to Australia to celebrate the airport’s community open day on 28 September.
Beaten once by the jet, Will put the pedal to the metal in his second race to beat the jet at the post.
“I’ve never raced a jet before so it was very exciting,” said Will, Australia’s first ever IndyCar champion.
With all media and publicity for the event managed by Punch, the free open day was the last chance for the community to preview Australia's newest airport before it went operational in November 2014.
Other event highlights included aerial shows, helicopter joy flights, terminal and runway tours, performances by local bands and country singer Amber Lawrence and appearances by celebrity MCs Natalie Gruzlewski and Tim Horan.
More than 18,000 people attended the airport’s ‘under construction’ open day held in November last year - another great event also managed by Punch.
Located near Toowoomba Queensland, Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport is the first greenfield public airport built in Australia in 50 years and the nation’s first privately funded public airport.
Punch continues to manage all media and public relations activities for Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport and the Wagners group.
